An Inconvenient Christian Truth
Thomas M. Saunders

My work as a Gnostic Priest is to expose the methods used to achieve Christian Gnostic Transcendence, with methods that were used in by the first Gnostic Christians. This involves learning about complex dualities and a method of study that becomes an underlying philosophy, the study of the Monad. I am the first scholar to divulge this secret in modern times. My purpose in writing this informal article is to explain what in fact can be shown.

I qualify Ophites, Sethians, Naassenes, and Valentinians generally as Sethians, based upon the fact they studied scripture like the Gnostic Gospels which are based upon forms of Sethianism. Seth was the third child of Adam. The heresiologist Hippolytus, documents what he knows or thinks about Sethians in his “Against All Heresies.” Much of what he said is wrong. What most people know about Sethian Gnosticism is wrong. (See; “Gnostic Secrets of the Naassenes,” by Gaffney.)

Irenaeus, Eusebius, and Tertullian all fail to disclose real information about Gnostics. Now that Gnostic scripture can be studied, we can see they had no idea how the Sethian idea of the Monad worked. They talk about it, but even modern scholars have missed the significance. One important point is that the study of the Monad is a lot older than Christianity.

Because scholars are now learning a number of things from these written works, the first thing that becomes apparent is mainstream Christianity from its earliest roots has tried to hide, and lie about the nature of Christian Gnosticism. My work is the first to explain the nature of the study of the Monad, which I show prima facie, as a twin system to the Chinese philosophy of the Tai Chi. The Sethians knew how to use this method, making Jesus the Monad, or source of Chi, (energy). This is a method of study known to Pythagoreans, and Chinese in the Sixth c. B.C. Until I exposed it, nobody knew how this system worked and that the Christian method is based upon the Oriental, and Pythagorean method.

The earliest Sethians were the core of the Alexandrian Church, started by Mark, and Peter, who appointed Pantaenus and others to teach Christianity. This means from around the year 45 C.E. Christian Gnosticism was being written down by people following Pantaenus, like Clement, and some of Jesus’ disciples like Baranbus, Mark’s uncle, and Basilides who was given special teaching by Matthias. Matthias, is said to have replaced Judas Iscariot, as part of the twelve Apostles. Alexandria became the center for Sethian Gnosticism, and the Apostolic lineage of its teaching is written in its library made of the Nag Hammadi Library, and the Bruce, Berlin, and other Codices containing ‘Sethian’ works.

The Sethian system and Pythagorean system are very much alike, but there are some minor differences in the Tai Chi system, one being that the Sethians and Pythagoreans believed Wisdom to be Sophia, or feminine in nature. The Tai Chi system is an 8 unit or type system, while the Sethian Monadology is a ten unit system. The Tai Chi is well known for the trigrams being a binary system. It is not my intention to teach this system in this document, but to declare the truth that this system is authentic, and related to the Tai Chi.

There are three documents available that can be seen as Christian scripture, based upon the knowledge of the Tai Chi. Martin Palmer’s book, ”The Jesus Sutras,” reveal three separate scriptures. These documents are thought to have been written from western Christian sources which would include Tatian, Justin Martyr, Marcion, and others who knew from the teachings of Basilides that the Sethian Monadology was in fact the Tai Chi, adopted first by Pythagoreans, and altered to fit Hellenistic terminology.

The Monad was studied by Hermetics, Zoroastrians, Jewish scholars like Philo of Alexandria, and by the Fourth Century was completely outlawed by the Church. The term came into modern lexicons via the scientific work of Gottfried Leibniz, who was a good friend of Benjamin Franklin. Leibniz’ work is void of any reference to the Monad as Spirit. However this is the essence of the Sethian works. Liebniz and Franklin would have been burned at the stake for suggesting the Monad as Spirit.

Modern Biblical scholars, who can grasp the concept of the study of the Monad in both pre-Christian, and post crucifixion eras, will quickly see that Christianity actually began when the followers of John the Baptist, and a few others adopted Jesus, as the Monad. This means they adopted Jesus as the source of energy called the Word. This knowledge leads to salvation and enlightenment. This is the Truth about Sethian Gnosticism. Christian ‘Chi’ is in fact Jesus Wisdom, Holy Spirit, or Word.

The ‘Word’ is in the Bible, (New Testament) but the Gnostic source of Jesus Wisdom is the “Gospel of Thomas,” and the Gnostic Gospels, and other Sethian works, like “The Pistis Sophia,” and “A Valentinian Exposition.” All of them become relevant to understanding the process of Gnosis. But the use of the method of the Monad was known and used since Pythagoras. At the time of Jesus it was being used by the followers of John the Baptist, like Simon Magus, Dositheos, the Apostle Philip, John and therefore all of the Apostles.

What is not in the Bible, are the methods of learning the Monad.

The Taoist Trinity, states that Man, is the same as heaven and earth. What this means in the classical Chinese philosophical sense is that the Mind, and the Heaven are the same in regard to “Wu Chi,” or the great void, and the human mind as in ‘Mu shin.’ (empty mind) In the Sethian view, Jesus is Silence, which is to put the nature of the void in a form that can be heard.

In other words the mind and universe both use the process presented by a void, or ‘kun.’ This is not a lot different from the B.F. Skinner behaviorist theory of the ‘blank slate,’ in regard to developing mental abilities in newborns.

The energy and concentration of the energy, Word/Chi (ki), is directed at filling the void. This is a specific process that is regarded as natural for both thought and how things take form and order in the physical universe. This is how the epistemology, or theory of learning and knowledge, is applied in the study of the Tai Chi. This is why and how the theory is applied to both mental thought and the physical action. The system virtually maps action applied to knowledge or ignorance.

The great void, Wu Chi, or Jesus as Silence, is only the first part of a much larger structure in the study of the Ba Gua (eight trigrams) or the different energies that can be seen to ‘fill’ the Silence, kun, or void. The void can be seen in the processes of the human body, mind, or a seed to a tree. Everything can be seen as having a specific ordering or sequencing value according to the general form of the Tai Chi. This concept is essential to grasp in the classical study of Chinese philosophy. It is also essential learning if you want to understand classical Christian Gnosticism.

Specific meanings are applied in Gnostic scripture to the terms Soul, Spirit, Knowledge, Body, Truth, Love, Hope, Faith, and others. This is the same in the study of the Tai Chi, certain words connote special meanings for those who understand the basics of the underlying philosophy of the Monad, or One. What comes out of the void, is both good and evil, male and female, yin and yang, badda and bing. The study of the Sethian Monadology enabled people to comprehend how to deal with the complex dualities in real life. Modern exploration is wide open to possibilities.

Those that study and understand how to apply the Tai Chi, don’t have an interrupted history, like Sethians. I would point out that I myself am a long time practitioner of Isshinryu Karate, which is based upon the Tai Chi.

It is through this study that I can verify the Sethian Monadology is a twin system to the Tai Chi. I can demonstrate how the Tai Chi is used in a fight, and I can introduce you to a few thousand friends who can look at me do it, and understand exactly how what happens is applied to the Tai Chi paradigm. It is complex and hard to comprehend at first. Some never ‘get it.’ Those that do can become what Paul in Corinthians called ‘gifted.’

Some karate masters have been thought to have reached a level of enlightenment we call Shingatai. Shingatai is not unlike Satori. They are called Meijin. Here is a description of the Sethian idea of Enlightenment….

Enlightenment: Refers to a state of being; described in Chinese/Oriental classics that reflects the same kinds of mental changes, ‘awareness,’ or ‘Satroi’ as in Gnosis. ”The Enlightenment refers to a movement in philosophy that advocated the untrammeled use of reason to establish truth. The movement challenged traditional authority, doctrine, and values. Emphasis was placed on the empirical method employed by the sciences.” (”The Five Gospels,” by Funk, Hoover, Harrier-Collins, 1993, p. 544.) ”For scientific knowledge is necessary both for the training of the soul and for gravity of conduct; making the faithful more active and keen observers of things. For as there is no believing without elementary instruction, so neither is there comprehension without science.” (Quote from Theodotus, See; Kirby, Criddle collections.) Criddle.

The Sethian method can be determined by understanding the many terms used in Sethian scripture that you cannot find in the standard Biblical Dictionaries. I make available a Glossary for the students of Sethian Scripture available in the Gospel of Thomas, yahoo discussion group. Its about 65 pages now, and a long download for older systems.

There are not too many modern “Sethian Christians,” but there are a lot of people that understand the Tai Chi. Almost every Oriental person I have spoken to in the past few years knows something about the Tai Chi, and the study of the eight Trigrams, called Ba Gua. Like the Sethians, the Orientals sometimes use the term Wisdom to mean Chi.

The Tai Chi, becomes religion when the energy of what fills the great void becomes a perception of God. In the case of the Sethians, that energy is the Wisdom of Jesus as the Monad, which is something modern Evangelicals and the Catholic Church have determined is heretical. They have no capacity to teach this system to anyone. They have tried to destroy this learning. The fact is the method makes the Gnostic a free agent to God, as far as salvation, and redemption. The Gnostic becomes his own Church.

The Christian Gnostic perception of God, is the Word, and not some kind of sentient being with the capacity to reek havoc on mankind. For the Gnostic the power of God is in Knowledge of how Jesus as the Monad, becomes the Word, and the Gnostic also becomes the Word, in thought and deed. This is known as the “living resurrection,” and part of the knowledge needed to complete the Gnostic Bridal Chamber Sacrament.

The truth about Gnostic Sacraments and secret knowledge is that they do exist, but not as secrets anymore. Like Satori, Christian Gnostic transcendence or enlightenment is possible, because this kind of transcendence has been realized and in some cases documented. In regard to the meaning of Truth, Basilides, Clement, Heracleon, and Theodotus all knew that Truth, in the Gnostic sense meant Church. Truth is part of the Sacred Tetrad, which is qualified in “A Valentinian Exposition.”

The Gnostic sacraments of the Eucharist, Baptism, Redemption, Salvation, the Chrism, and the Bridal Chamber, become very clear when you can utilize the underlying philosophy of the Monad as a model to that philosophy. Like the martial artist who becomes his ‘artform’, the Sethian Christian transforms himself with the same model, with some uniqueness common to the Sethian beliefs. The Sethians learned to wear the Soul like a Garment. This means very much the same thing as the martial artist who becomes the energy of his ‘artform’ which has become part of his very being.

The following passage describes how Solomon learned to wear the Word of God, or Monad like a Garment. It is from an untitled text in the Bruce Codex. The author’s implication is that Jesus transcended much the way Solomon was thought to have… I have capitalized words relevant to Gnostic Monadic sets found inother related scripture. This is to emphasize their specific meaning to the Gnostic process.

“Because of this work, the Father of the All (Pleroma), the indescribable One ‘, sent a Crown (treasure) in which is the name of the All (Pleroma.) ‘, whether endless, or unutterable, or incomprehensible, or imperishable, or unknowable, or still, or all-powered, or indivisible. This is the Crown of which it is written: “It was given to Solomon on the day of the joy of his heart.” The first Monad furthermore sent him an ineffable Garment ‘ which was all Light and all Life and all Resurrection, and all Love and all Hope and all Faith and all Wisdom, and all Gnosis, and all Truth, and all Peace, and all-visible ‘, and all-mother, and all-mystery, and all-source (Root), and all-perfect, and all invisible, and all unknowable, and all endless, and all unutterable, and all Deep, and all incomprehensible, and all Pleroma, and all Silence, and all unmoved, and all unbegotten, and all still, and ) all Monad, and all ennead, and all dodecad (12), and all ogdoad, and all decad, and all hebdomad, and all hexad, and all pentad, and all tetrad, and all triad, and all dyad, and all Monad.

And the All is in it, and also all found themselves ‘ in it, and knew themselves in it. And it (the Monad) gave Light to them all with its ineffable Light. Myriads upon myriads of powers were given to it, so that at one (and the same) time it should establish the All. It gathered its Garments and made them into the form of a veil which surrounded it on all sides. And it poured itself over them all, it raised them all. And it divided them all according to rank and according to ordinance and according to forethought.”

The Garment the Martial Artist wears as his ‘artform’ are the basic eight genus skills of punching, kicking, grabbing, squeezing/choking, throwing, joint locks, groundwork, and counters. From these eight types or units, thousands of separate techniques can be connected. These eight skills come from the tetrad of punching, kicking, grappling, and counters. The tetrad comes from the dualities of offense and defense, hard and soft, boxing skills, and grappling skills. These come from the knowledge of fighting that fills the void in a fight.

The above Sethian passage tells the Gnostic to wear the skills of Resurection, Love, Hope, Faith, Peace, etc., the skills of the Garment, and thus become the Word. All Sethian Monadic sets start with Word, and end with Knowledge, or Gnosis. That is what makes them Sethian. Word, punching, kicking, grabbing, squeezing/choking, throwing, joint locks, groundwork, counters, and Knowledge, make me a Sethian Christian Karate-ka. Easy huh?

Sethian scripture can meet the design of what was required generally speaking to what qualifications were used to design the contents of the New Testament. Generally the texts have to be shown to have been used for worship. The works had to be affirmed as written by an Apostle or affirmed by an Apostle. And the last requirement to become canonized as Christian scripture is the text has to be shown to have had power in the lives of those who have read and used it. (Please feel free to research the requirements and Sethian scripture, and rules of canonization to judge for yourself.)

I submit the Gnostic Gospels of Thomas, Mary, Phillip, and the other Sethian scripture meet those requirements without any hitch, prima facie. When Jesus became the Monad, Christianity was born, because the study of the Monad was essential to knowing the method of teaching the Wisdom Jesus taught his followers. It was essential to the knowledge of pre-Christian Jewish Gnostics. The study of the Monad was part of the Wisdom of John the Baptist, part of the magic of Peter, Simon Magus, and Dositheos, from the very roots of Christianity, prima facie.
